A Seasonal Workplace Cleanliness Index
Workplaces don’t get dirty by themselves. They follow clear seasonal patterns.
Every year, Smart Cleaning teams see the same types of mess appear in offices, coworking hubs, business parks, and commercial buildings across Leeds, York and the wider Yorkshire region.
Dust builds up, pollen levels rise, mud arrives, and carpets take a hit, year after year.
Enter the Yorkshire Dirt Index – an in-depth analysis of seasonal cleaning patterns that brings together local weather data, workplace behaviour trends, and real, on-the-ground cleaning insight to show when workplaces are most affected.
The Yorkshire Dirt Barometer
How workplace dirt levels change throughout the year.
- Summer – Cleanest (Dirt Score: 4/10)
- Spring – Mixed Conditions (Dirt Score: 6/10)
- Autumn – High Dirt Season (Dirt Score: 8/10)
- Winter – Dirtiest (Dirt Score: 10/10)
The 2026 Index reflects weather patterns, seasonal pollen conditions, and cleaning demand observed across Yorkshire workplaces in the last 12 months.

How We Created the Yorkshire Dirt Index
The Yorkshire Dirt Index is built on real-world cleaning experience.
Each season is assessed using five workplace dirt factors, scored by Smart Cleaning teams based on what they see and clean every day across Yorkshire.
The Five Dirt Factors
- Rainfall & Mud Risk — Rain causes wet foyers, salt from icy roads makes its way inside and muddy ground gets tracked indoors.
- Pollen Levels — Tree and grass pollen settles on desks, vents and carpets causing hay fever, while bins fill with hankies.
- Insects & Pests — Flies, wasps and spiders leave webs and their swatted bodies in corners and windowsills, while birds who target them leave droppings on windows.
- Footfall Levels — Occupancy, commuting patterns and busy periods can impact how dirty offices get.
- Human Behaviour — Spills, desk clutter and waste build-up change seasonally leading to different dirt levels.
About the Dirt Score
Every factor is scored on a 1 to 5 scale, using observed cleaning demand and on-the-ground experience from Smart Cleaning teams working across the region.
These scores are then combined to produce an overall seasonal Dirt Score out of 10, allowing workplaces to be ranked from cleanest to dirtiest through the year.
A Yorkshire Perspective
The index also reflects how Yorkshire-specific conditions influence workplace cleanliness. It includes everything from rural commutes out of the Dales and Moors to city-centre footfall in Leeds and York, and seasonal events that temporarily increase mess in surrounding offices.

Summer – Yorkshire’s Cleanest Season
June • July • August // Overall Dirt Score: 4/10
Summer 2025 was officially the warmest on record with a mean temperature of 16.10°C. This led to increased open-window ventilation and insect ingress in office buildings.
Dry weather, lower footfall, and better ventilation all reduce day-to-day grime. However, high pollen, insects, and drink spills prevent it from being completely problem-free.
Summer Dirt Profile

| Dirt Factor | Score | What Cleaners See |
| Rainfall & Mud Risk | 1/5 | Dry pavements limit muddy footprints |
| Pollen Levels | 4/5 | Pollen coats desks, vents and carpets |
| Insects & Pests | 3/5 | Flies and wasps enter open windows |
| Footfall Levels | 2/5 | Holiday periods reduce footfall |
| Human Behaviour | 3/5 | Cold drinks lead to more spills |
Why Summer Comes Out Cleanest
For many facilities teams, summer is the calmest point in the cleaning calendar thanks to:
- Low rainfall significantly reduces wet floors and mud transfer
- Dry ground conditions limit soil being carried into buildings
- Summer holidays lower daily occupancy and pressure on facilities
- Cold drinks increase desk and carpet spill incidents
Yorkshire Events That Can Spike Summer Dirt
- Great Yorkshire Show (Harrogate) — muddy boots and agricultural dust can be carried into offices when meeting clients or partners who have attended the event
- York Races — Ebor Festival — higher footfall and drink spills from work events at these popular race days.
- Leeds Pride — glitter, confetti and sticky residues near city-centre offices
“Summer 2025 was calmer overall, but the heat changed how offices behaved. Open windows brought in more insects, pollen settled on surfaces, and cold drinks led to far more desk and carpet spills.”

Spring – Pollen & Dust Hybrid
March • April • May // Overall Dirt Score: 6/10
Spring 2025 came with warnings to allergy sufferers of a ‘pollen bomb’, driven by elevated tree and grass pollen levels across Yorkshire.
The season was also exceptionally dry, with a hosepipe ban introduced following the driest spring in 132 years and just 15cm of rainfall between February and June.
Spring Dirt Profile

| Dirt Factor | Score | What Cleaners See |
| Rainfall & Mud Risk | 3/5 | Sudden showers create muddy entrance mats |
| Pollen Levels | 5/5 | High pollen settles on desks, vents and equipment, while hankies fill up bins |
| Insects & Pests | 2/5 | Early insect activity begins in warmer spells |
| Footfall Levels | 3/5 | Footfall increases after Easter and term starts |
| Human Behaviour | 3/5 | Shared spaces see rising food and drink use |
Why Spring Still Creates Office Mess
Spring creates a mix of visible and hidden mess:
- Pollen peaks from March to May, settling on desks, vents and equipment
- Sudden rain showers quickly undo clean entrance areas
- Increased cycling and walking track dirt indoors during mixed weather
- Offices become busier after Easter and term-time returns
- Shared kitchens and breakout spaces see higher daily use
Yorkshire Events That Influence Spring Dirt
- Harrogate Spring Flower Show – A pollen-heavy period affecting surrounding offices and business parks.
- York Races — Spring Meet – Increased footfall and drink spills in hospitality-adjacent workplaces.
“Spring 2025 surprised a lot of people. The pollen was relentless and, despite the dry weather, we were wiping down desks and vents far more often than usual.”

Autumn – Leaf & Wet Footprint Season
September • October • November // Overall Dirt Score: 8/10
After a very dry Spring and Summer, Autumn brought above-average rainfall, including the fifth wettest November on record. Rainfall increased, leaves fell, and offices refilled after summer. It’s one of the most demanding seasons for workplace cleaning.
Autumn Dirt Profile

| Dirt Factor | Score | What Cleaners See |
| Rainfall & Mud Risk | 4/5 | Wet leaves and rain create muddy, slippery entrances |
| Pollen Levels | 2/5 | Pollen drops but fine dust lingers indoors |
| Insects & Pests | 4/5 | Spiders and insects appear in ground floor offices |
| Footfall Levels | 4/5 | Offices refill after summer, increasing daily traffic |
| Human Behaviour | 4/5 | Bins fill faster and shared spaces get busier |
Why Autumn Is a High-Dirt Season
Autumn is when dirt becomes persistent rather than occasional.
- Fallen leaves break down into sludge and are trodden into carpets
- Rising rainfall causes sustained wet footprint problems
- Back-to-work surge increases desk clutter and waste
- Heating systems restart, circulating settled dust
- Spider season affects offices, warehouses, and business parks
Events That Increase Autumn Workplace Dirt
- York Food & Drink Festival — heavier footfall near city-centre offices
- Leeds International Film Festival — increased pedestrian traffic
- Start of football season — muddy footwear after weekend fixtures
- University term start — higher footfall in shared buildings
“After such a dry start to the year, the wet autumn hit hard. Wet leaves, damp entrances and full offices meant dirt built up quickly across Yorkshire sites.”

Winter – The Dirtiest Season
December • January • February // Overall Dirt Score: 10/10
Unexpected snowfall in November marked an early start to Yorkshire’s wintry conditions, increasing slush, grit and carpet soiling across Yorkshire offices.
Persistent rain, muddy commutes, gritted pavements, high footfall and flu season collide to create the highest cleaning demand of the year.
Winter Dirt Profile

| Dirt Factor | Score | What Cleaners See |
| Rainfall & Mud Risk | 5/5 | Mud, rain and grit saturate entrances and carpets |
| Pollen Levels | 1/5 | Minimal pollen, but more fine indoor dust |
| Insects & Pests | 2/5 | Reduced outdoor insects, occasional indoor pests |
| Footfall Levels | 5/5 | Festive footfall and commutes peak daily traffic |
| Human Behaviour | 5/5 | Food, drink, tissues and Christmas-related waste increases sharply |
Why Winter Dominates the Dirt Index
- Persistent wet weather causes constant muddy footprints
- Gritted streets track salt deep into carpets and mats
- Rural commutes bring soil and debris into offices
- Flu season leads to overflowing bins and surface contamination
- Christmas footfall overwhelms entrances and shared spaces
Yorkshire Events That Amplify Winter Dirt
- Leeds Christmas Market & York St Nicholas Fair — heavy city-centre footfall
- Festive football fixtures — mud tracked into offices after matches
- York Theatre Royal pantomime season — increased footfall near the Minster
“The early snow in November set the tone for winter. Mud, grit and slush were constant problems, and winter 2025 easily saw the highest cleaning demand of the year.”
